Gucci’s Controversial “G” Advertisement

Gucci’s hairy advertisement with sexual undertone is very controversial. Model Carmen Kass, in this advertisement, is almost undressed and pulling down her panties, and showing off her body hair shaved into the letter “G”. Mario Testing, the famous photographer, always shock people by his controversial piece of art. The image was displayed in Vogue’s February edition magazine.

The ASA (Advertising Standards Authority), which has the power and right to ban such offensive content, said it was investigating after receiving several complaints from the viewers. Many people have called the image coarse, vile and degrading to women. Director of Mediawatchuk, John Beyer, called for an instantaneous ban of this image. This advertisement is fascinating on one hand and very sexual and different on other hand. Therefore, the advertisement screening women in this way is very detrimental to society and should not be appearing in mainstream magazines.

Tom Ford, Gucci boss, is used to this kind of publicity; he was also behind the controversial Yves St. Laurent Opium perfume campaign. Since 1995, they have been famous for being provocative and sexual. However, it is a thoroughly irresponsible and unpleasant tactic. A Gucci spokesman said that nobody is around to speak about the picture; all our important players are in Milan.
